— Stephanie Powers

Were you always a leader? When did you know you had the capacity to lead?

I was always extremely involved and knew at a young age that I could lead a group.

Who or what had a strong Influence on you growing up?

Much of my determination and resolve can be attributed to my family. Since I was a young child, I have worked diligently to succeed and prosper.

Can you summarize your career trajectory from the first job to present?

I had excellent opportunities to work in the field of communication throughout my career.  I worked as a Staff Writer for key publications in the South County area including the Boca Raton News and Forum Publishing Group, covering various assignment stories.  After working at the Boca Raton News and Forum Publishing Group, I joined Pierson Grant Public Relations, a PR Firm serving a wide spectrum of clients, in the position of Account Manager. After working in the industry and augmenting my skills. I began my journey with Lynn University. Originally, I served as the Coordinator of Academic Projects in the Office of Academic Affairs.  I eventually became a faculty member and am currently an Assistant Dean in the College of Communication and Design.

What role have mentors played in your life?

Mentors have played a noteworthy role in my academic career. I would not be where I am today if it were not for my mentor.

What is the most difficult leadership lesson you’ve learned?

It has been difficult for me to have to tell colleagues “no” and it is even more difficult to realize that not everyone is always going to understand your position on a particular topic.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

I always challenge myself to be the best version possible to set a prime example for my children. Fortunately, I have a wonderful support system and family is always my number one priority.

What advice do you have for aspiring leaders?

Appreciate the significance of hard work, cultivate and maintain connections in the community, empathize, listen, innovate, and ask questions!

What would your 21-year-old self think of you now?

My 21-year-old self would be extremely proud as I always knew I wanted to do something to make a difference and teach the next generation.

What is a favorite leadership quote and why?

"When people talk, listen completely." --Ernest Hemingway

With a background in journalism, I believe that “listening” is one of the most important skills one can acquire.

What is next for you?

To obtain my Ed.D in Educational Leadership.
