An Interview with Genevieve Hoppe, Assistant Head of School, North Broward Preparatory School, Coconut Creek, Florida.

Never be afraid to take a risk; you can’t allow self-doubt to keep you from achieving your goals
— Genevieve Hoppe

Were you always a leader? When did you know you had the capacity to lead?

I can't say I was always a leader in the traditional sense.  I have always been a cheerleader; I get true joy out of encouraging and supporting others and much of my current leadership style reflects this passion. I think that professional development, reading books, and paying close attention to mentors has helped me become a true leader.

Who or what had a strong Influence on you growing up?

My family had the strongest influence on me. I am a real "home body." I went to the same school PK-12th grade, have had two best friends my whole life, met my husband in eighth grade, and lived next door to my mom when I graduated college. I really look to them for guidance and support.

Can you summarize your career trajectory from the first job to present?

While in college I had two jobs, a traveling Universal Cheerleader Association coach and a representative in the Furman University Admissions Office. I learned a tremendous amount about independence, organization, professionalism and work ethic through these positions. After a very brief job in sales, I knew that education was my sweet spot. For a number of years I taught in both the middle and high school before leading as an assistant principal and principal. My newest endeavor is serving as the Assistant Head of School at North Broward Preparatory School.

What role have mentors played in your life?

You learn from the best and you learn from the worst, but you always learn something if you are open! You can never underestimate the benefit of observing, asking questions, and trying something that pushes you. The most influential mentors I have had not only serve as role models, but they also encourage me to do things that help me grow and improve. It is important to realize early on that you don't have to know everything or do it all right the first time. Pay close attention to the people who inspire you and above all, ask for help!

What is the most difficult leadership lesson you’ve learned?

Oh wow, so many! I have learned that when you are seen to be in a position of influence, what you say and what you do has far reaching impacts. I have learned the power of listening and caring deeply about other people, and being very thoughtful about how I communicate.

How do you maintain a work-life balance?

Exercise is so important to me. I make time for walking, yoga and connecting with others in group fitness. While it is hard to make time in your schedule because we all feel so busy, I find that I am much more productive after taking time for myself. If I calendar it in then I will stick to it!

What advice do you have for aspiring leaders?

Never be afraid to take a risk; you can't allow self-doubt to keep you from achieving your goals. And, when you're on this journey remember that people come first! The more positive connections you have with others the more you will learn and the more opportunities you will have.

What would your 21-year-old self think of you now?

I think she would be pretty shocked! I didn't have a goal to be a school leader so this was something that came about slowly and over time.

What is a favorite leadership quote and why?

"So hold your head high and don't be afraid to mark to the front of your own parade." It's a quote from the book "Wherever you are, my love will find you." I love this quote because it is about confidence and loving yourself and being unique.

What is next for you?

Immediate goals include learning more about PK-12th grade education and becoming more successful at leading leaders. I will always be a student and plan to complete a doctorate program. Another goal is to become more connected in the international market through my work with Nord Anglia Education. Who knows... stay open to new opportunities and learn and grow!
